Taxes and Funding
The three primary sources of funding for North Country EMS are:
Regular Property Taxes
North Country EMS operates thanks to a voter approved 10-year levy. The most recent regular levy election was in 2009, for collection for 2010-2019. State law limits EMS levies to a 50-cent-per thousand tax, which does not completely fund the 24 hour, seven day a week operation.
Excess Levy Property Taxes
To supplement the regular levy, North Country EMS runs a special Excess Levy every three to five years. The most recent Excess Levy was held in 2017 for collection in 2018. State law maintains that Excess Levy funds must all be collected in the first year. The funds collected in the first year help us to operate over the next three years.
Thanks to our citizens the approval rate on our levies has always been very high. It is our belief that we will have the support of our community if our Agency supports the community, and we are constantly striving to meet that goal.
In order to collect the lowest possible amount of property tax to allow us to serve our citizens, we bill patients’ insurance companies. You may be contacted for insurance information, but if you are a citizen of the EMS district who pays property tax, there is no out-of-pocket expense for ambulance service. Non-resident patients are billed and must pay their full bill.

Please consider making a charitable donation to North Country EMS. Donations are tax-deductible and are greatly needed and appreciated. Contributions in memory of a loved one are a great way to honor that person. Donations are used to purchase needed equipment or for training classes for paramedics and EMTs.
